Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters and Horus Vision have partnered to provide a powerful shooting tool that combines the critical environmental data and targeting software solutions required for precision shooting -- all in one four-ounce pocket-sized unit. Previously, shooters would need to obtain environmental data from a Kestrel meter and then input that data into a PDA loaded with Horus ATrag ballistics software. Now, the Kestrel Ballistics Weather Tracker with Horus ATrag Software contains all of the necessary data and solutions in one device to minimize user workload and distraction. Plus, the Kestrel meter is IP67 waterproof and MIL-STD-810F rugged, allowing users to avoid the expense and weight of a ruggedized PDA.

The Kestrel 4500 NV with Horus ATrag Ballistics combines Kestrel's flagship meter, the Kestrel 4500 with Night Vision, with Horus ATrag Ballistics software to bring you the first lightweight, hand-held tool to give you both comprehensive environmental data plus integrated aiming solutions. Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters and Horus Vision partnered to provide a powerful shooting tool that combines the critical environmental data and targeting software solutions required for precision shooting.

The Kestrel 4500 NV with Horus ATrag Ballistics allows you to load, customize and store multiple guns, rounds and targets. Target parameters include distance, angle, longitude, speed, direction and wind. Kestrel's highly accurate measuring and averaging of wind together with built-in digital compass for target bearing and wind direction assists in defining the target winds.

The unit allows users to load and customize multiple guns and rounds from the extensive proprietary Horus database. Simple, intuitive screens allow the user to create up to five targets customized for location, distance, direction, declination and winds. The Kestrel meter's highly accurate measuring and averaging of wind and digital compass for target bearing and wind direction assists in defining the target winds. Once these parameters are set, the Kestrel meter takes over - tracking the current met data and automatically updating the firing solution using Horus ATrag advanced proprietary algorithms and taking coriolis and spin drift into account. No additional user input is required.

Horus software that comes with the 4500 Atrag Ballistics is the civilian version. The military version of the Horus ATrag Ballistics software is only available via special GSA contract to officials with the correct security clearance. The software that ships with the Kestrel 4500 Horus ATrag is version 3.0. It is possible to upgrade the firmware as new versions become available, however it will need to be returned for firmware updates.

The Kestrel 4500 Horus ATrag Ballistics accurately measures/features:

Active Targets & Target Range

Wind Direction & Wind Speed

Direction of Fire

Inclination Angle & Inclination Cosine

Target Speed & Target Direction of Movement

Includes Digital Compass

These added features make the 4500 the Kestrel Meter of choice for military professionals, HAZMAT teams, and flight crews. Like all the pocket weather meters in the Kestrel 4000 series, the Kestrel 4500 is capable of storing and charting up to 1400 data points for later analysis.

If you select the Bluetooth model, your meter includes custom communication software designed to quickly and easily configure your data transmission frequency, download logged data, graph data and transfer data to other applications. It is not longer to purchase an interface separately, the new Kestrel Meters with Bluetooth include the software necessary to communicate wirelessly at a range of up to 30-feet.

For military professionals, the NV version of the Kestrel 4500 features a night-vision preserving backlight. Backlight incorporates optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green spectrum light to preserve night vision. (Note: This backlight appears soft greyish pink, not "red", and is still in the visible spectrum, so is not compatible with night-vision equipment.)

For military professionals, the NV version of the Kestrel 4500 is equipped with a red night vision backlight. The backlight appears as a subdued, almost white-pink hue. This is not an issue with the meter - this is how the light is designed for optimal performance in low-light conditions.

Weekend shooters and military snipers alike have been calling for a Kestrel Meter with crosswind calculation for years — and the Kestrel 4500 meets that demand completely. The elite Kestrel 4500 has the most complete list of features in the entire Kestrel Meter family, with the only absent elements being the airflow and humidity ratio measurements available with the Kestrel 4200 Air Flow Tracker.

Tactical MOLLE/PALS Case
This case is designed for military personnel wishing to carry their Kestrel on a MOLLE/PALS mounting system. Manufactured exclusively for NK by EHMKE Manufacturing in the USA of USA components, it features a padded 1000 Denier DuPont Cordura Plus fabric body, a reinforced top flap, a 1" fastex buckle closure, and an inner pouch for spare AAA batteries.

The mounting system is EHMKE Manufacturing's unique MOLLE/PALS compatible secure fold/lock design with no hardware to break or rust. This mounting system also adapts for use on a belt up to 2 1/2" wide. Sized for the Kestrel 4000 line, it will also hold a Kestrel 1000 to 3500 series in its carry case.

MOLLE (pronounced MOLLY) is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. It is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and rucksacks utilized by the United States Armed Forces, and its use is also growing in the British Army in the form of the Osprey Modular systems.
The Kestrel can measure in TMOA (true minute of angle), SMOA (shooter minute of angle), and MILs (milliradians). The unit displays ballistic tables with data of the shot extending out to various distances (see Range Card on page 17 and 18 in the manual). This Horus meter can provide ballistics solutions out to 4000 yards (or about 3700 meters).

Once you’ve built the gun that you’ll be using (and you’re at the range of course), you need to enter the target range into the Kestrel, as well as the latitude (if you’re concerned about the coriolis effect), then either manually enter the wind or use the auto capture feature to capture the wind speed.

The Bluetooth serves to connect the computer to the Kestrel if the user is interested in logging weather data (just like in the non-Horus version) and uploading to the computer, or the user can utilize the Gun Library software created by (and available from) Horus Vision. This software will allow customers to build guns on their computers, download them to the Kestrel, or upload guns they’ve modified in the field.
